Scots ban fracking after 99% say No
FRACKING was yesterday banned ‘indefinitely’ by the Scottish government – a policy in opposition to that in England.
Holyrood said the ban of the controversial oil extraction method had ‘overwhelming’ public backing. A public consultation received more than 60,000 responses, 99 per cent of which were in support of the ban. Environmental groups said it would protect health and the environment. But unions and business groups decried the decision as hypocritical given that Scotland imports shale gas from US fracking.
Critics also said the ban would damage the economy and deprive Scottish people of jobs.
