BORN ON THIS DAY
HENRY WORSLEY (19602016). The British explorer died trying to become the first person to cross Antarctica unaided — and complete the journey of his hero Sir Ernest Shackleton, 100 years after he failed. Worsley (right) was trapped by a storm and collapsed 30 miles from his goal. He was airlifted to hospital, where he died of an infection. DOROTHY LAWRENCE (1896-1964). The English journalist, the only woman to fight in the trenches of World War I, posed as a man after her editors refused to let her report from the front line. She wore a corset stuffed with cotton wool to hide her figure, but after two weeks at the Somme, she revealed her identity and was sent home.
