Is it racist to call yourself ‘English’?

-

LUVVIES such as Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen who denigrate England or the English, yet owe everything to them, fill me with anger. I am a Welshman, born and raised in Llanelli. I left Wales 48 years ago because of job opportunities in England and to further my career in industrial management. I love England and the English and I have had a good life here. To quote Mervyn Johns in the film Halfway House, which sums up my feelings: ‘The English are our friends and neighbours, her enemies are our enemies, and her friends are our friends.’ Be proud to be English, as I am proud to be part of you.

WILLIAM DAVIES, Slough.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen’s statement that using the term you are ‘english’ or referring to ‘england’ is racist (but not Scots, Welsh or Irish?) is as pretentious as the interior designs he has, for years, inflicted on the viewing public. MRS JOSE H. O’WARE, Methwold, Norfolk.

THE Welsh are Welsh, the Scots are Scots and the Irish are Irish. Are they racist, too? Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen can call me racist, as I am English. If the Leftie luvvies want to regard themselves as ‘British’, then so be it. Whenever I fly out to Australia or New Zealand, I put myself down as English.

DANA PERRIN, Ticehurst, E. Sussex.

I HAVE news for Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. he was born in London, which makes him english.

P. STEVENS, Morden, Surrey.
