Learn from migrants
I FEEL compelled to write about a recent experience of hospitality in london. as a yorkshire woman now based in sheffield, i have little cause or desire to go to london. i consider it a different world.
But i recently went there on a work
trip, staying in a well-known budget hotel chain and taking part in the training at an upmarket chain hotel.
It was notable that the staff were largely migrant workers, and were the most welcoming, friendly and helpful people that you could hope to meet.
This makes all the difference in a world of faceless chains, big brands and generic customer service in which people are often poorly trained in this country.
Indeed, in my experience, even in ‘lowly positions’ in fast- food restaurants, migrants could teach our native young workers a thing or two about good manners and customer service. It goes without saying that I treat with respect the people who serve me.
If we needed reminding of how much our hospitality industry, a major part of the economy, is powered by migrant workers, then this is surely it. These people have much to add to our country.
