Rio chief arrest

THE scandal engulfing the Internatio­nal Olympic Committee and officials from the 2016 Olympic Games has escalated.

Rio committee president Carlos Nuzman and his righthand man, Leonardo Gryner, were arrested yesterday, indicted for ‘ corruption, money laundering and criminal organisati­on’. There are also allegation­s of bungs of $2million and possession of 16 gold bars. Nuzman is suspected of being involved in vote-buying to secure the Games for Rio.

Brazilian prosecutor­s said they had evidence that payments allegedly made to secure Rio as host city were in excess of the $2m estimated and at least another $500,000 was paid to the IOC members to secure the rights.
