- By Lee Boyce

ONE of the new £10 bank notes featuring Jane Austen sold for £7,200 at an auction yesterday.

Fierce bidding broke out over the AA01 000010 polymer note, the tenth Jane Austen note to be printed. It was expected to fetch up to £3,000.

In total 87 £10 notes with serial num- bers ending between 10 and 100 were sold by London auctioneers Spink at the event, which was arranged by the Bank of England and raised more than £2 0,000 for three charities.

The one with a number ending 11 sold for £ ,200, while number 12 got £3, 00 – also smashing their target prices.

The launch of the Jane Austen note last month saw the first, AA01 000001, given to the Queen, while AA01 001817 was donated to Winchester Cathedral, which features on the design and is where Austen was buried in 1817.
