TAYLOR FACES THIRD GILLINGHAM EXIT
PETER TAYLOR could cut ties with Gillingham for a third time as he prepares to step aside for a new manager at the League One strugglers this week. The Gills were soundly beaten at home by Portsmouth with Matty Kennedy netting the winner as more misery descended on Priestfield. Caretaker boss Taylor, who is not ruling himself out of taking the job full-time, would willingly exit the club he has spent three spells at if a new boss doesn’t want him to return to his director of football role. ‘I don’t make a secret that I’m fully qualified to do the (manager’s) job — I’ve done it before, I’ve had lots of clubs,’ Taylor said. ‘But it’s not anything I’ve put myself up for this time. ‘It wouldn’t surprise me if the chairman’s got plans this week.’ Gillingham want Mansfield’s Steve Evans and will look for an appointment before they face Peterborough on Saturday. They were toothless in the first half here and opened the second period in the same lacklustre manner as Portsmouth snatched the lead just 26 seconds after the re-start. Curtis Main threw himself at Nathan Thompson’s cross to crash a header off the post and Kennedy was on hand to slam home what proved to be the winner. Josh Parker headed home from a free-kick for the second-bottom Gills, but his celebrations were cut short by the offside flag as their misery goes on.
