NEW ZEALAND thrashed Solomon Islands 8-3 on aggregate in their play-off, so will face the fifth-placed South American team in a two-legged tie next month. Neighbours Australia qualify through Asia and are halfway through an unlikely play-off against Syria. They drew the first leg 1-1 in Malaysia, with Tuesday’s second leg in Sydney (10am British time). The winner faces the fourth-placed CONCACAF team. Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Iran are through.
