Fonda’s workouts ruined her hips, says Green Goddess

THEIR workouts in distinctive Lycra outfits may have been the last word in fitness during the 1980s.

But exercise guru Diana Moran has criticised rival Jane Fonda for her more intense routines – suggesting they left the actress needing her ‘hips done’.

The 78-year-old, known as The Green Goddess in her heyday, said moderate exercise was a better way to maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid painful joint problems.

Mrs Moran – who instructed the nation to ‘wake up and shape up’ during her televised exercise class on BBC’s Breakfast Time in the 1980s – told the Cheltenham Literature Festival: ‘I’m somebody that just thinks of more natural things, I’m not into extreme sports of any sort at all.

‘When I was doing Breakfast Time, I was doing moderate exercise. Jane Fonda was doing all the other stuff, and she’s had hips and all sorts of other things done. Exercise in moderation is key, the same applies to food.’

Miss Fonda, 79, released a number of highintensity workout videos, including one in 1982 encouraging viewers to ‘feel the burn’. The actress had a total hip replacement in 2005, a few months after knee surgery.

In her talk about how to become ‘SuperAgers’, Mrs Moran added: ‘Most of us need to be active for 20 minutes every day, that’s really not that difficult to achieve and the activity needn’t be a run. It can be a brisk walk, it’s a brilliant full body exercise that gets the heart going.

‘But if you don’t want to be walking, then maybe you love gardening. You’re bending and stretching and doing natural movements all the time.’ Miss Fonda was last night yet to respond to requests for comment.
