Scholes in shock move to take over at Oldham

PAUL SCHOLES has held talks with Oldham Athletic over the vacant manager’s job at Boundary Park. The Manchester United legend, a fan of the League One club, was spoken to at an undisclosed location in the town yesterday. Oldham, without a manager since the departure of John Sheridan on September 25, declined to comment. Another ex-United player, Richie Wellens, is currently caretaker manager. Wellens has led the Latics to three straight victories since taking the helm, and has impressed officials and large sections of the club’s support. Scholes (below) lives in the town and has been spotted at Boundary Park a number of times over the years. Oldham are currently 19th in League One and a takeover remains ongoing. Earlier this month, Holland legend Clarence Seedorf was interviewed for the post but Scholes and Wellens are understood to be the two leading candidates for the role. A combination of the pair cannot be ruled out, although Wellens is keen to carry on the work he feels he has already started. He believes, with the right backing, he can launch an assault on promotion to the Championship. Senior players have requested a meeting with chairman Simon Corney, which is set to take place today. Sources say an announcement is likely after next Tuesday’s trip to Bradford City. Scholes was offered the Oldham job in 2015, but the 42–year-old decided the time was not right. Should Scholes take the Oldham hotseat, he would need clearance from the Football League given his part-ownership of National League Salford City. Rules state that a person may not have an association with two clubs, although permission can be sought.
