THIS IS WHAT 60 LOOKS LIKE

- Interview by FLORENCE SCORDOULIS

Gill LEVINGS is a manager at a bridal showroom. She lives in essex and has two children – a son, Andrew, 32, and daughter Zoe, 34.

GET A MAKEOVER

IT’S EASY to get stuck in a rut with make-up, wearing the same style for years. But it’s vital to keep updating your look. I regularly visit department store make-up counters to learn about new anti-ageing techniques. For example, a lady from Clarins taught me not to apply mascara to lower lashes as it smudges, making you look older and tired.

BARGAIN BROWS

IN THE past few years, my eyebrows have gone grey and become more sparse. But it doesn’t cost a fortune to sort this out. I get a £5 tint and threading at my local salon, then use my usual brown No 7 Stay Perfect Eye Shadow (£7, boots.com) to touch them up. Don’t splash out on expensive brow products — eye shadow does the job just as well.

LONG LEG TRICK

AFTER working in fashion for 40 years, I’ve picked up several cheats for accentuating legs. Stand in front of a mirror: find the part of your legs where the gap is widest — the rule is that dresses are most flattering when cut off here. For someone of my daughter’s age, this is usually at thigh level: but I find above the knee or mid-calf more demure.

HAVE IT ALL

MY FAVOURITE shops are Whistles, L.K. Bennett and Karen Millen. I’m always going in store to try on new collections, but never buy anything. Instead, I go home and set a product ‘alert’ on my eBay account — within 6-8 weeks, it’s often for sale as a real bargain. I buy £175 dresses for £20! It allows me to wear what I want.

SAY YES! (AND NO)

AS I’VE got older, I’ve learned when to say yes to new experiences — and no, when it’s not right for me. This pushes me out of my comfort zone: it led me to take a new job (managing a bigger showroom) when I was head-hunted at 57. But it also means I’ll turn down social invitations or other requests, if I know they will cause unnecessary stress in my life.
