GERMANS RECALL ENGLAND TEEN

- By KIERAN GILL

ENGLAND’S Under 17 World Cup hopes have been dealt a blow after star forward Jadon Sancho was withdrawn from the squad at the last minute by Borussia Dortmund. The former Manchester City academy player has been England’s success of the tournament, scoring three times and assisting twice as they won all their group games. Yet 17-year-old Sancho (right) was pulled out of England’s final training session before today’s last 16 knock-out game against Japan in Kolkata. Sancho was not named in Dortmund’s Champions League squad but will now fly to Cyprus to be with his clubmates before tonight’s game against Apoel Nicosia. He has yet to make his first-team debut for Dortmund, who paid £10million to sign him in August. ‘Jadon’s gone home,’ said England Under 17 coach Steve Cooper. ‘Dortmund have asked that he heads back to Germany, which is

obviously a

disappointment in terms of the tournament. ‘People enjoyed seeing him play and it’s a disappointment for him because he very much enjoyed his time in India and relished the chance to play in a World Cup. ‘He loves playing for England so it’s sad to see him go. I can only imagine Dortmund want him back to play in their first team at the weekend and I assume he will be starting — because I can’t think of a reason why you would take a player away from a World Cup.’
