School ‘slave day’ row

-

A PRIMARY school head has apologised after children were asked to come in dressed as slaves with ‘dirty and wornout clothes’ for Black History Month.

The request was made in a letter to parents of six and seven-year-olds at St Winefride’s Catholic Primary School in Newham, east Lon- don, on Friday. It asked families to send children to school wearing unwashed clothes ‘stained with tea or coffee to look more authentic’ for a special assembly.

One anonymous parent told the Newham Recorder: ‘You wouldn’t ask Jewish children to come in and reenact the holocaust.’
