A red card in the Commons for MP who’s a Champions League referee
EXCITABLE MPs traditionally wave their order papers in the Commons to express their feelings.
But yesterday it was a red card held aloft as SNP MP John McNally ‘sent off’ Tory rival and football referee Douglas Ross for being absent to officiate at a match in Spain.
Mr Ross, the MP for Moray in Scotland, was an assistant referee for the Champions League game between Barcelona and Olympiakos of Greece, and was not due to speak in the opposition day debate on the Universal Credit.
But during Prime Minister’s Questions, Mr McNally, the MP for Falkirk, asked Theresa May: ‘What signal does she think this sends to hardworking members of the public who are expected to turn up for their day jobs or face sanctions?’
In reply, Mrs May said: ‘Scottish Conservative members are doing more for the interests of Scotland in this Parliament than the Scottish nationalists have ever done.’
