Bayern bring Celtic back down to earth

-

CELTIC’S hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout stages were given a reality check by a revitalised Bayern Munich in a 3-0 defeat. Bayern’s slow start to the season, coupled with Celtic’s 3-0 win at Anderlecht last month, had given boss Brendan Rodgers belief that his side could spring a surprise in Group B. But any hopes of the Scottish champions causing Bayern problems were quickly dashed as Thomas Muller fired past Craig Gordon. Joshua Kimmich headed in Bayern’s second, before Mats Hummels completed the scoring shortly after half-time. Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe became the highestscoring teenager in Champions League history as the French side beat Anderlecht 4-0. The 18-year-old, who has now scored eight goals in the competition — overtaking Patrick Kluivert’s record — kicked things off with a well-placed finish in the third minute. Edinson Cavani headed home before the interval, and Neymar and Angel Di Maria chipped in with second-half goals. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi completed his own landmark feat, scoring his 100th goal in European football as 10-man Barcelona beat Olympiacos 3-1. Despite Gerard Pique’s 42nd-minute red card, Barca had a 1-0 advantage at the break after a Dimitrios Nikolaou own goal. In the second half Messi scored a free-kick, before Lucas Digne tapped in and Nikolaou notched a consolation.
