Why bed is now the last place we wear our PJs

- Daily Mail Reporter

PYJAMAS are now worn more outside the bedroom than in it, research suggests.

Traditional sleepwear is increasingly seen as acceptable daywear when relaxing, a poll for department store Liberty found.

One in seven people – 14 per cent – change into pyjamas by the time they sit down for their evening meal while one in eight women (13 per cent) see nothing wrong with shopping in PJs. Overall, nine out of ten wear pyjamas when relaxing at home. Three per cent have even worn nightwear at work while one in six change into them on planes. The survey of more than 2,000 of the store’s customers found one in ten snuggle under the duvet naked and the same number wear only underwear. One of the biggest bedroom problems for those living in cities is night-time noise. This was a significant issue for 24 per cent, while 28 per cent blame their partner or the children for their failure to drop off to sleep. A fifth suffer from insomnia or find it hard to get to sleep. Some 8 per cent admit that checking their smartphone is partly to blame.

Top tips used by those struggling to sleep include warming the bed with a hot water bottle followed by fitting blackout blinds.

Sleep physiologist Dr Kirandeep van den Eshof, of St Thomas’s Hospital, said: ‘Stress and anxiety are having a massive impact on sleep in modern day life and can manifest more at night leading to insomnia.’
