Traffickers and fraudsters who get here...then vanish
Enquiries by the Mail at several Romanian courts identified suspected gangsters, fraudsters and smugglers who have all made their way to the UK: THE TAX EVADER
ION Cosmin Musuroia fled to the UK after he was given a four-year suspended prison sentence for role in a tax evasion scheme worth £1.3million. In his absence, a judge revoked the suspended sentence and passed an immediate custodial sentence.
Incredibly, court papers in Romania show the 32-year-old to be living in Belvedere, south-east London. When the Mail visited the semidetached house, a Romanian woman said Musuroia had moved to nearby Abbey Wood and worked in a local warehouse for KnowHow, the support arm of Currys and PC World.
THE MILLIONAIRE
GABRIEL Popoviciu, a millionaire, 7, escaped to the UK from Romania after being handed a seven-year jail term. He was convicted of fraud and corruption in relation to his acquisition of a 224-hectare plot of land in northern Bucharest.
He was arrested on August 14 after Romanian authorities issued a European Arrest Warrant. Later released on a £200,000 bail to a Mayfair flat pending deportation proceedings.
THE PEOPLE TRAFFICKER
CARMEN Corina Stanciu faces people trafficking charges in Romania where she is accused of being a leading figure in a Bucharest prostitution ring. Arrested in November 2014 along with 24 other alleged members of the ring and put under house arrest. Earlier this year, she was given permission by a judge in Romania to come to the UK between July 14 and July 21. Last night, Romanian authorities could not confirm her whereabouts.
THE FUGITIVE
COSTEL Adrian Pop was handed a three-year suspended prison sentence for his role in a gang smuggling cigarettes into Romania from Ukraine. A judge in Romania allowed him to visit the UK between November 10 and 14 last year. His suspended sentence was later revoked and he was sentenced to immediate custody. Last night, Romanian authorities could not confirm his whereabouts.
THE SMUGGLER
IULIAN Catalin Cioanca, 40, another cigarette smuggler, was given a 16month suspended prison sentence. Prior to his sentencing, he was allowed to travel to the UK between October 2 and November 3 last year to go to a pigeon fanciers’ event. Last night, Romanian authorities could not confirm his whereabouts.
