I HAVE been reading with interest the letters about first jobs (Peterborough). I left school at 15, the year before the school leaving age went up to 16. My first job was as a messenger boy for the Manchester Evening News. I used to sit at the end of a chute, sending messages to the print room from reporters. I also had to run around, getting food and drink for the Manchester United reporter David Meek and the City reporter Dave Gardner. My wage was £6.50 a week. It cost me £4 a week for the train journey, and I had to give £2 a week board to my parents. That left me with just 50p for spending money. I was only there five weeks — not surprising, eh?
