If I bow, Ma’am, will I get a sugar lump?

- By Rebecca English Royal Correspondent

WHEN you meet someone for the first time, it’s important to be polite – particularly if it’s the Queen you happen to be face to nose with.

fullySo Perseus followed the royal drum etiquettehorse faith-... by giving the monarch a dignified bow.

And once the more formal introductions were out of the way, the pair seemed to get on famously, with the Queen giving the Household Cavalry’s newest a beaming smile. Her Majesty was being introduced to the 17.1 hands steed, whose stable name is Big Red, at the regiment’s headquarters in London yesterday.

Commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel James Gaselee had asked the Queen to officially name the Cavalry’s newest recruit.

And with his brasses polished, his mane brushed and his coat gleaming, Perseus (his new name) certainly looked fit for a Royal regiment. The Queen, 91, who was wearing a sky-blue Stewart Parvin coat and matching Angela Kelly hat, heard how Household Cavalry drum horses carry the rank of Major and are senior to all other Army animals. Perseus is currently having intensive training for his starring role with the Household Cavalry Band, and is set to ‘pass out’ at the Queen’s Birthday Parade next June.
