Top gear? £1,795 skirt that looks like a car mat

- By George Odling

INSPIRATION can often strike in the most unlikely of places. And for one fashion designer, it apparently struck... in his car.

A leather skirt by luxury label Balenciaga bears more than a passing resemblance to a rubber carpet protector found in a vehicle’s footwell.

However, with its £1,795 price tag, the item is a little bit more expensive than picking up a mat from Halfords.

The skirt, first seen at Paris Fashion Week earlier this year, is backed with neoprene, and features snap buttons and the label’s name on the hem.

Social media users were quick to offer advice to those keen to emulate the style but for a more budget-friendly price. Consumer website Money Saving Expert tweeted an image of the skirt alongside a photo of a £40 car mat with the caption, ‘We’re not designer fashion experts, but…’

Twitter user Scott Simpson replied with a helpful link to the B&M Stores car boot mat, which sells for £7.99 – a mere 224 times cheaper than the designer skirt.

Balenciaga has form when it comes to turning everyday objects into high fashion – it also has a £1,680 tote bag which looked remarkably similar to Ikea’s 40p ‘Frakta’ bag.
