LETTERS Justice by Crimewatch

-

I, TOO, am grateful to Crimewatch ( Letters) and an eagle- eyed policeman. Six years ago, I was attacked in broad daylight in my local park. I was grabbed from behind as I sat on the grass reading, but I managed to struggle free and the man ran off.

I called 999 and a policeman, already in the park, chased and arrested the attacker. He was bailed and I worried I would see him again.

About a week later, Crimewatch had a report on two women who were raped in Brighton, but the attacker escaped. It was similar to my attack and the officer who dealt with my case called Sussex Police.

The DNA on my clothes matched that on the Brighton victims’ clothes. The man was charged, and after a trial where I gave evidence as well as his 17- year- old victim, he was sentenced to 18 years and deportation back to Poland.

I am so thankful for the programme and the quick-wittedness of the police officer. My attacker could have gone on to commit more assaults and cause trauma to other people.

Crimewatch was instrumental in catching many criminals who would otherwise have escaped prison. I can’t believe the BBC is dropping this show that does such a great service for the public.
