Bombardier axes 280 jobs

-

BOMBARDIER is axing 280 jobs in Belfast as its row with Boeing continues to brew.

The firm is cutting non-production jobs at the Northern Ireland plant as part of 7,500 layoffs worldwide announced last year.

It comes after Bombardier joined forces with US company Airbus to dodge crippling tariffs imposed by the Trump adminis- tration to protect Chicago air business Boeing. Airbus has agreed to take a majority stake in Canada-based Bombardier’s CSeries aircraft programme. Staff in Belfast make wings for the C-Series.

Bombardier said: ‘ We need to cut costs and improve the efficiency of operations to ensure long-term competitiveness.’
