Solve our mystery apple ap-peel!

-

I AM delighted there is a British apple revival, with hundreds of forgotten varieties being rediscovered (Mail). We have an apple tree in our garden that produces lots of fruit each year, but we have been unable to confirm the variety. Local garden centres didn’t know, but at an open day at Reaseheath College near Nantwich, an expert thought it might be an Astrakhan Red. The apples grow to an almost uniform size and have a mainly red skin, some showing green or yellowish patches when ripening. On the tree they are dull, but they polish up to a lovely shine, which looks beautiful in harvest baskets. They show little sign of disease, though we don’t treat them. The flesh is firm and white, crisp and sweet. They are quite juicy and not at all gritty. I wonder if anyone can identify our mystery apple tree. LIZ SOMERFIELD, Alsager, Cheshire.
