Blue Planet reveals bizarre seabed shuffler with FEET

- By Laura Lambert TV and Radio Reporter

BLUE Planet II has already given us a bird-eating fish and others that change gender.

And the hit BBC documentary will get even stranger this weekend by giving viewers a glimpse of a fish ... with feet.

The unusual orange creature – called a sea toad – lives in the deepest parts of the Gulf of Mexico and has evolved to walk on the seabed.

The bizarre fish – which can grow to up to 12in long – will be shown shuffling along the muddy sea floor on its ‘stubby leg-like pectorals’ before swimming off.

Sir David Attenborough, 91, says: ‘This fish has been living for so long that its fins have changed into something more useful – feet. They help it shuffle about.’

The sea toad is not the only ‘oddball’ the camera crews discovered when they descended into ‘The Deep’.

They also caught a glimpse of the barreleye fish – or ‘spookfish’ – which has a transparent, jelly-like forehead.

Sir David will inform viewers in Sunday night’s second episode that the unique feature allows the fish to look ‘up through its own skull’.

Blue Planet II airs on BBC One at 8pm on Sunday
