CAGE: How it backed killer Emwazi
CAMPAIGN group Cage has been widely condemned for support of Islamic State killer Mohammed Emwazi – Jihadi John.
When the Kuwaiti-born Londoner was unmasked, the group did not apologise but called him ‘extremely kind’. In 2015 Cage accused British intelligence services of radicalising Emwazi. It later emerged Asim Qureshi, who made the remarks, had advocated jihad at a 2006 rally.
Cage, which says it aims ‘to empower communities affected by the war on terror’, was set up in 2003 by a group of London Muslims to support UK suspects in Guantanamo Bay. Through former inmate Moazzam Begg, who joined Cage as outreach director in 2006, the group developed links with Al Qaeda cheerleader Anwar al-Awlaki.
In 2010, Begg spoke of his desire for a caliphate-style regime in Britain.
