What an eye-opener

-

I AM having treatment at Birmingham Midland Eye Centre for wet macular degeneration (WMD) and have just had my 30th injection of Lucentis at £742 a dose.

I would be more than happy to have the much cheaper Avastin, which costs £12 per injection. Then I would not feel so guilty at the cost of my treatment and the saving could be put to a better use by the NHS.

I am shocked that drugs companies Bayer and Novartis are threatening to sue the NHS to stop it using the cheaper treatment (Mail).

A spokesman for Bayer says: ‘ Elderly patients with eyesight problems may lack the cognitive capacity to make a fully informed decision about their treatment.’

I would like to tell him eyesight problems do not affect your brain and I can see when a company is putting profits before ethical reasons. Greedy pharmaceutical giants should not be ripping off the NHS. Give me Avastin — that would be one in the eye for Novartis and Bayer. GILLIAN WHITTAKER,

Birmingham.
