Should F1 champ Lewis Hamilton be knighted?

-

SIR Jackie Stewart is right: Lewis Hamilton should not expect a knighthood for ‘winning a few sporting events’. However, many sports people have received gongs for doing just that, such as Andy Murray for finally winning Wimbledon, Mo Farah, who until recently lived and trained in the U.S., and Team GB for winning Olympic medals during a few weeks of running, jumping, riding bikes and having fun. However, David Beckham, an ambassador for British football, is ignored. G. WATKINS, Chipping Norton, Oxon. THE reason Sir Jackie Stewart has a knighthood is that he has charm, charisma, intelligence and class — all things Lewis Hamilton lacks. BRIAN BLAKE, Maidstone, Kent. WHY isn’t Sir Jackie Stewart better disposed towards Lewis Hamilton? Maybe he should listen to fellow Scot David Coulthard for a lesson on professional even-handedness. ROD WILLIAMS, Gt Holland, Essex. IT’S hard to argue against Hamilton getting a knighthood when we already have Dame Kelly Holmes, Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, Sir Mo Farah, Sir Chris Hoy and Sir Bradley Wiggins. Lewis has done as much, if not more, for his sport and his country, and all from humble beginnings. GEORGE COOKSON, Wakefield. IF RIDING a bike or rowing a boat merit knighthoods, Lewis should get the same honour for driving a car. What should I expect for myself? I can do all three! W. J. HUNTINGFORD, Amersham, Bucks. WHEN Hamilton relocates to the UK from Monaco and pays taxes on the £96,000 a day he earns, he might be worthy of a knighthood. Wrapping a Union flag around his shoulders doesn’t mean he is deserving of such an honour. MICHAEL BARNBROOK, Ramsgate, Kent.
