Pistorius judge ‘too lenient’
A JUDGE ‘ overemphasised’ Oscar Pistorius’s disability and was far too lenient on him, prosecutors said yesterday as they fought to increase his prison sentence for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
They urged five judges at South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal to overturn the six- year sentence handed to the double-amputee athlete, pictured, and give him the prescribed minimum of 15 years.
‘Murder is murder,’ said chief prosecutor Andrea Johnson, adding the sentence given to Pistorius by Judge Thokozile Masipa in 2015 was ‘shockingly lenient.’
If the court agrees, Pistorius, 30, could remain in prison until after he is 40.
This is the second time prosecutors have challenged a decision in the case by Judge Masipa. The first time they won an appeal to overturn her initial verdict of manslaughter rather than murder.
