DRAGON FRUIT

So named because its flower looks like an explosion of flame, the pitaya – or dragon fruit – is indigenous to Central America but is also grown and exported from South East Asian countries such as Thailand and Vietnam. The flower produces a beautiful but shortlived fruit that looks like a pink rosebud. The insides taste like a white kiwi.

MORINGA

Native to parts of Africa and Asia, the moringa plant has been credited with boosting immunity, lowering blood pressure, fighting stress and increasing libido. It’s also said to be good for hair, nails and skin.

WINGED BEAN

Also called the dragon bean, this is a legume plant native to New Guinea. All parts are edible: Leaves can be eaten like spinach, flowers can be used in salads and even its tubers can be eaten raw.

BAMBARA GROUNDNUT

This sub-Saharan African legume produces yields even in droughts. The nuts are boiled, roasted or dried. The dried nuts yield flour for dumplings, cakes and biscuits.
