Marmelo can go down a storm in Melbourne

- By MARCUS TOWNEND

MARMELO could deliver one of the most dramatic victories in the history of the £3.5million Melbourne Cup tomorrow. The four-year-old, a fancied horse after a fast-finishing sixth in the half-mile shorter Caulfield Cup, is trained by Hughie Morrison, who all season has had a doping case hanging over him after Our Little Sister tested positive for an anabolic steroid after a race at Wolverhampton in January. Morrison, 57, has protested his innocence and argued he has been the victim of malicious intent while offering a £10,000 reward for information. Marmelo is one of the 10 European raiders in the field of 24 runners for a race no British trainer has won. Frankie Dettori has dashed to Australia from the Breeders’ Cup in California to ride 2016 winner Almandin.
