NO REPEAT FOR SUTTON

- GEOFF KNOX at the Abbey Stadium

SUTTON’S hopes of repeating last season’s incredible Cup run turned out to be pie in the sky as they lost to Cambridge united’s upper crusts. The National League side then reached the last 16, losing to eventual winners Arsenal. It was a tie that descended into farce after Sutton’s substitute goalkeeper Wayne Shaw was filmed eating a pasty in the home dug-out. Shaw was sacked by the club and later charged by the FA over breaches of their betting rules. Yet Sutton manager Paul Doswell had no qualms after his side lost to 10-man Cambridge, whose winner was scored by Jabo Ibehre in the 45th minute. The hosts had been reduced to 10 men five minutes earlier when George Maris picked up a second yellow card for diving. Yet Doswell insisted: ‘We wanted to win, but there is no disappointment. ‘What happened last year took a lot out of all of us, including me. The run that we had was a once-in-alifetime opportunity.’
