£4.5bn revamp as BA lines up 72 new planes

-

BRITISH Airways yesterday announced plans to spend £4.5billion on 72 new planes, better food and fast wifi.

It comes after a tumultuous year for the airline, including a major IT breakdown and criticism over cuts.

Chief executive Alex Cruz outlined plans to buy 72 smarter planes over the next five years, including the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787-10.

The airline will also refurbish 128 of its existing planes, many of which have become dated and tired.

Britain’s flagship carrier said it will invest in providing a better service in a bid to set it apart from budget rivals.

It will offer all passengers fast Wi-Fi – although at an extra cost – and powerpoints will be provided on all seats.

BA also pledged to provide ‘upgraded catering’ in economy on long haul flights. Announcing the plans at the World Travel Market industry event, Mr Cruz said the airline ‘is facing a combination of competitive forces more challenging than at any point in our history’. He added: ‘We must have an offer that is attractive to everyone.’
