LONDON MARATHON WINNER HANDED 4-YEAR DRUG BAN
KENYA’S 2016 Olympic and London marathon champion Jemima Sumgong has been given a four-year doping ban. The 32-year-old tested positive for the banned blood-boosting drug EPO on February 28. She claimed this was the result of treatment for an ectopic pregnancy, but a tribunal in Nairobi found there was no record of Sumgong’s supposed hospital visit, concluding the treatment sheets she produced were fake. The positive test has already cost Sumgong a significant amount of appearance cash and prize-money — she has been suspended since April — but her results stand for now. Sumgong’s former training partner Rita Jeptoo tested positive for EPO in 2014 after winning the Boston and Chicago marathons.
