KNACKERED MOTHERS’ WINE CLUB

- BY HELEN McGINN

BARGAIN OF THE WEEK Comuna Malbec, £6 (normally £7), Sainsbury’s NAMED after the commune in Buenos Aires where the tango was born, this is a cheap and very cheerful Malbec — light, soft, supple and full of black fruit flavours. WHITE WINE Le Alte Friulano 2016, £9, M&S THE Friulano grape is related to Sauvignon Blanc and this stylish wine, from northern Italy, has that same freshness — lemons, limes — but is properly different. There’s a touch of clementine about it.

FOOD PAIRING: Grilled salmon. RED WINE Waitrose Posadas Hispanas Rioja 2015, £6.99 WAITROSE’S ‘Blueprint’ wine range — all the labels are blue and white and look frighteningly similar, in my opinion — is a collection of classic wines from the world’s most famous regions. This is one of my favourites in the current line-up: oaky, with vanilla and spice alongside juicy black cherry flavours. Great value.

FOOD PAIRING: Sausage casserole. SPARKLING WINE La Gioiosa Prosecco Brut, £10, Morrisons I TASTED my way through a line-up of Proseccos recently, and this one stood out for all the right reasons — so fresh and light, with a lovely note of almond and pear to it, too.

FOOD PAIRING: Cheese straws.
