Love letter to my lost Last Post lifestyle

-

DESPITE the military inaccuracies, I’ve enjoyed the TV drama The Last Post, having lived in Aden from 1961 to 1963.

My father served in the RAF and I worked in the High Commission —– I was 17 and it was my first job.

The heat was intense, so we worked from 7am to 1pm and then it was down to the beach to ruin our skin for life!

The series has been accurate in the clothes, furniture and music. I played the Ketty Lester song Love Letters, featured in the show, endlessly on my record player.

It’s also spot on about the politics and snobbery of the services hierarchy. The quarters depicted are not unlike our flat on the top floor of an apartment block.

The political situation was beginning to escalate at the end of our tour so I had to go to work in a Land Rover with an armed driver.

My mother and a friend were out in their car one day — looking much like the stars of the show — and were terrified when some locals stoned their car. SUE WEAVER, London SW14.
