I LEFT school with two A-levels and started work in 1969 on a salary of £360 a year, from which I paid my mother a monthly sum for my keep. I worked in a computer department where it was rumoured that an experienced programmer could earn £1,000 a year. I thought if I earned that then I would be made for life! In less than a year I got a job at Morris Motors as a junior computer programmer for £600 a year. My father was outraged as he couldn’t understand why they would pay an inexperienced girl such a large salary!
