On the right track
READER Alan Jarrett, who swapped his first- class train seat for more comfort in standard class ( Letters), reminded me of my rather different experience.
At work, I could only claim for second-class rail travel, but on one occasion, I was accompanying two senior members of staff so I was allowed to buy a first- class ticket and join them in the dining car.
I was surprised I didn’t spot them on the train, but I enjoyed the first- class experience. We met up on the platform when we arrived at our destination, where they told me their sorry tale.
They had underestimated the cost of a first-class ticket and only had enough money for ordinary tickets.
