Amazon uses 45 FEET of packaging to deliver a calendar

- Daily Mail Reporter

AMAZON has been criticised for using 45ft of paper packaging to deliver a calendar.

Annie Gelly, who purchased the Collins A2 calendar from the online shopping giant, said she was shocked to see ‘such a waste’ of paper and that it was ‘bad for the environment’.

And she was not the only customer left baffled by the packaging. Another woman who bought the calendar, who asked not to be named, said hers was delivered with 26ft of paper, adding: ‘I can’t help but think Amazon are chopping down the rainforest. It was so excessive.’

Mrs Gelly, a grandmother of one, said she expected the £8.99 calendar – which measures around 23in by 16.5in – to be sent in an envelope, but it came in a cardboard box so large it could have fitted ‘at least ten’ of them inside.

‘There were nine lengths of screwed-up brown paper which measured about 45 feet in total,’ she said. ‘Amazon always pack- age stuff this way – I’ve had things like this in the past and they’re particularly prone to it – but this really took the biscuit.’

Mrs Gelly, who is in her 70s and lives with husband Dave in Herne Hill, south London, added: ‘It’s such a waste, I couldn’t use the paper for anything else because it was all scrunched up. I think it’s bad for the environment and you would have thought Amazon would try to be more careful.

‘The paper has obviously come off a roll and they’ve just pulled it off willy-nilly and scrunched it up until the box was full.

‘I think it’s a very shoddy and haphazard way of packing flat items like calendars. I’ll definitely be complaining about it.’ Amazon said they are working hard to reduce waste, pursuing initiatives including using recyclable packaging and avoiding using multiple shipping boxes.

A spokesman added: ‘These initiatives have grown to include more than 1.2 million products over time and have eliminated more than 36,000 tons of excess packaging just in 2015.’
