Labour MP called black Tory ‘token ghetto boy’

- By Claire Ellicott Political Correspondent

A LABOUR MP who described a black Tory candidate as a ‘token ghetto boy’ and a ‘scumbag’ is facing calls for her suspension over her ‘racist’ remarks.

Emma Dent Coad made the comments about Shaun Bailey, a former adviser to David Cameron.

Mr Bailey yesterday called on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to withdraw the whip from the MP for Kensington.

In blog posts, Miss Dent Coad referred to Mr Bailey as a ‘low life’ while he was contesting the Hammersmith constituency for the Tories in 2010.

She said he would no longer be welcome in North Kensington if he won – despite him being born in the area.

Miss Dent Coad, who became the first Labour MP for Kensington at the general election in June, wrote: ‘Who can say where this man will ever fit in, however hard he tries? One day he is the “token ghetto boy” standing behind D Cameron, Shaun Bailey and Emma Dent Coad the next “looking interested” beside G Osborne. Ever felt used? Two things are certain. One is that his current posse of public school buddies will drop him like a hot potato if he doesn’t get elected. The other is that he will no longer be welcome in North Ken if he does.’

She quoted two ‘former neighbours’ who allegedly referred to Mr Bailey as a ‘free-loading scumbag’ and ‘the most hated man in North Kensington’.

Mr Bailey, who was an adviser on youth and crime to Mr Cameron from 2010 to 2013 and is now a member of the London Assembly, said he was ‘shocked and saddened by the hate-filled racist’ remarks.

‘I have dealt with prejudice and attacks from hard-line groups, including the BNP, but not once have I been labelled a “token ghetto boy”,’ he said.

A spokesman for Miss Dent Coad said: ‘As is clear from the original blog post, Emma was quoting Bailey’s own comments about parts of the borough, plus those of his Conservative colleagues on Kensington and Chelsea Council.’
