BRIDGE MASTERCLASS

- PETER DONOVAN

YOu are West, declarer in 6 ♣ , and North leads ♦ J. You duck in dummy, and South overtakes with ♦ K and returns ♦ Q. With yesterday’s clues, can you see how to make this difficult contract? THe contract would be fairly simple if South had three diamonds, as you could just ruff your two losers in the suit.

With the obvious clue about South’s ability to overruff, you have to resort to a squeeze, which will work only if north also has four spades.

You’re in luck and set about reaching the fourcard ending. At trick three, you cash ♣ AQ and then your five major suit winners, arriving at tomorrow’s position.
