Why DID Greggs give star Nativity role to a sausage?

- By Tom Witherow

BAKER Greggs has been accused of sacrilege after an advert for its Advent calendar showed a sausage roll in place of the baby Jesus.

Christians said the mock Nativity scene was ‘an affront to millions’ and no other religion would be treated in that way. Some called for a boycott of the high street chain.

The £24 calendar has a voucher for a Greggs product behind each door. Its Nativity scene shows a sausage roll, surrounded by the Three Wise Men.

The Newcastle-based bakery apologised yesterday, saying: ‘We’re really sorry to have caused any offence, this was never our intention.’

But the Rev Mark Antony Edwards, a vicar in the city, said: ‘This is just disrespectful and arrogant. I would challenge them to release a similar stunt at Ramadan and face the backlash. It would be huge.’
