on television aren’t the only ones worrying about their waistlines. Pointless host Alexander Armstrong admits he’s been counting his calories since 2013 and fasts twice a week to avoid getting fat.

‘I’m a slave to the 5:2 diet. I’ve been doing it for four years and I will do it forever. Mondays and Wednesdays, every week, I fast,’ Alexander, 47, tells me at the sugarplum Dinner, in aid of the diabetes charity JDRF, at the V&A Museum.

‘It’s terribly easy to do those two days: I have very little for breakfast — coffee is enough, actually — and then miso soup for lunch, which has almost no calories. For supper, chilli con carne with a load of rice.’
