At last! June made a dame at age of 92

- Daily Mail Reporter

WITH a career spanning seven decades, nobody can dispute June Whitfield’s dedication to the entertainment industry.

And as the 92-year-old received her damehood yesterday, Prince Charles joked it was ‘a long time coming’.

The star was given the honour by the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace for services to drama and entertainment. After the ceremony, Dame June said: ‘It’s absolutely remarkable. One feels so honoured and proud. It takes a lot of getting used to.’

The London- born comedy star has numerous credits in the West End, as well as on TV and radio. She became a household name in her long- running partnership with the late actor and comedian Terry Scott in the sitcom Happy Ever After in the Seventies, which later became Terry And June.

She is also much loved as the acerbic mother of Jennifer Saunders’ Edina Monsoon in Absolutely Fabulous and reprised her role last year in the spin- off movie. On her future career plans, she said: ‘I think I’m now more suitable for a role that takes place in bed or in a wheelchair or something – so there’s not too much walking about.’
