China pumps vast sums into Zimbabwe’s economy.
NEW PARLIAMENT: £35m
Built the new 650-seat parliament building, replacing the colonial-era parliament.
MEDICAL LOANS: £76m
China granted Zimbabwe a medical loan facility in 2011 and also built a 130-bed hospital in rural Zimbabwe.
ACADEMIC CENTRES: £100m
The Chinese have constructed academic centres and built the Zimbabwe National Defence College, the country’s first military higher education academy.
MINING: £200m
Chinese own 40% of Zimplats platinum mining.
POWER PLANTS: £900m
In 2015, state-owned Power Construction Corporation of China signed a deal to expand a power station.
Meanwhile, China’s Sinohydro Group is expanding the Kariba South Power Station in a £270m million project.
In 2015, Zimbabwe awarded three solar power projects to Chinese companies, or to local firms with Chinese partners.
FUTURE LOANS: £3bn
China has promised further loans and grants for direct investment.
