NOVEMBER 21, 1945 NAzI chiefs sat in the dock at Nuremberg yesterday when their trial as war criminals opened. Nineteen of the 20 accused did physical jerks and ran up and down the corridors of their prison yesterday evening under the eyes of their guards. NOVEMBER 21, 1968 POP singer Marianne Faithfull (pictured) has lost the baby she was expecting in February. Last night she was ‘getting on fine’ in a London nursing home. The child’s father, 25-year- old Mick Jagger, leader of the Rolling Stones, said yesterday: ‘We’re both very upset, but we still hope to have a baby some time.’

NATALIA MAKAROvA, 77. The first ballerina to defect from the Soviet Union, she was given asylum in London in 1970. She said: ‘What’s good about Russia: we had our own freedom, actually. It was free from frivolous things. This whole Soviet world, without food, without entertainm­ent, without nonsense, it’s kind of pure.’ She was feared by dance partners after throwing water over one who forgot his steps. LORNA LUFT, 65. The actress, singer and second daughter of Judy Garland (pictured) says she has spent her life struggling to cope with her mother’s death from a drug overdose when she was 16. She recently performed shows featuring Garland’s music, but never sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow, saying: ‘I’ve never sung the song and I never will. How can you improve on perfection?’

HETTY GREEN (1834-1916). The U.S. financier, known as the ‘Witch of Wall Street’, died the world’s richest woman, with assets that today would be worth £3 billion. Green was known for being frugal, wearing old clothes and eating tins of dry oatmeal. JOHN (1913-1985) and Roy (1913-2001) Boulting. The filmmakers and identical twins were behind British classics such as Brighton Rock, I’m All Right Jack and Lucky Jim. One of Roy’s five wives was actress Hayley Mills, who was more than 30 years his junior. Their son Crispian Mills is the frontman of rock band Kula Shaker.

ON NOVEMBER 21…

IN 1953, scientists at London’s Natural History Museum revealed the ‘ Piltdown Man’ skull was not from ‘ the earliest Englishman’ but a hoax. Rather than being nearly a million years old, the bone fragments were 500 years old and some had belonged to an orang-utan.

IN 1987, actors Bruce Willis and Demi Moore married in Las vegas.
