Dug up in a German field, a symbol of Nazi evil

- Mail Foreign Service

A GIANT concrete swastika has been unearthed by construction workers at a sports field in Hamburg.

The team was digging with an excavator to build changing rooms when they hit the 13ft Nazi symbol, pictured.

Members of the sports club at the Hein-Kling stadium said the swastika served as a foundation for a monument in the city’s Billstedt district that had been torn down decades ago.

Officials want it removing as soon as possible, it was reported yesterday. They are planning to destroy it with jackhammers because it is too heavy to be taken away in one piece.

After the war, Germany brought in strict laws to prohibit the use or display of several emblems linked to the Third Reich – including the swastika.
