4 PAT GARRETT

-

THE legendary sheriff who fired the shot that finally killed Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett is said to have been childhood friends with the deadly outlaw.

But when he was elected sheriff of Lincoln County in 1880, Garrett dedicated his life to tracking Billy down, eventually killing his foe after the outlaw escaped from prison and shot two men on the way out.

The sheriff wrote a biography of his enemy in 1882. It was deemed authoritative but historians later found embellishments. In 1908, Garrett himself was shot dead in unclear circumstances.
