EPICURUS was a Greek philosopher whose name is now associated with eating fine foods and living for pleasure. Epicurus wouldn’t be very happy about this, as he believed that life should be lived simply and thoughtfully. In MY LIFE AS AN EPICUREAN (RADIO 4, 11AM), Andy Zaltzman explains how we have misunderstood the fundamentals of Epicurus’s austere and moral creed.

MOZART wrote the lovely aria Ch’io Mi Scordi Di Te? (Will I Forget You?) for the soprano Nancy Storace to perform in Vienna at what was probably her farewell concert. The work would have left the memory of Nancy’s sweet voice lingering in the minds of all who heard her singing. Joanne Lunn (pictured), who also has a lovely voice, sings the work in tonight’s RADIO 3 IN CONCERT

(7.30PM), given by the Halle Orchestra. The theme of the concert is love and paradise, and Mahler’s Symphony No 4, depicting a child’s idea of Heaven, is also on the bill.

n JOHN BARROWMAN was joined at the Royal Albert Hall by Scarlett Strallen, Ashley Brown, the London cast of Aladdin, the BBC Concert Orchestra and a host of stars for a FRIDAY NIGHT IS MUSIC NIGHT (RADIO 2, 8PM) featuring Disney’s Broadway hits. It includes songs from Beauty And The Beast, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, Tarzan and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame.
