Circus tiger shot dead at train station

- From Peter Allen in Paris

AN escaped circus tiger was shot dead in Paris last night after it walked into a railway station.

The animal was seen roaming around the French capital’s 15th arrondissement before police marksmen moved in.

The alarm was raised just before 6pm local time, when announcers on rail line T3a said: ‘A tiger is on the loose – please vacate the station.’

Armed police arrived at the scene with the tiger’s owners. An eyewitness who gave his name as Richard said: ‘There were fears the tiger would hurt railway passengers around the Garigliano Bridge. That’s where he was cornered and then shot dead.’

The animal was believed to have escaped from the Cirque Bormann-Moreno, which set up its circus tent in the area earlier this month. A police spokesman said the tiger had been ‘neutralised’.
