Corbyn hate mob jeers: Who cares?

- By Rachel Watson

JEERING Jeremy Corbyn supporters booed and heckled as the Labour leader was asked about Prince Harry’s engagement yesterday.

Shouts of ‘ Who cares?’ and ‘Get out’ could be heard from the crowd at a Labour rally as a journalist asked Mr Corbyn for his reaction.

The Labour leader is a republican but congratulated the newly engaged couple, saying: ‘I wish them well, I hope they have a great time and great fun together. Having met Harry a couple of times, I’m sure they’re going to have a great deal of fun together.’

His comments were met with a reluctant smattering of applause at the rally in Glasgow.

Mr Corbyn went on to praise Harry and his brother William for their work to highlight mental health conditions, but a BBC News subtitling error transposed his praise for ‘Prince Harry and his brother’ to ‘Prince Harry and Hezbollah’.

Twitter users poked fun at the gaffe, comparing it to the BBC satire W1A.

Following the event, a photograph emerged of Mr Corbyn’s notes, showing a reminder to congratulate the happy couple. He appeared to have spelled Meghan Markle’s name wrong, writing ‘ Harry + Megan’, with a separate note saying only ‘engagement’.

Mr Corbyn faced criticism for refusing to kneel before the Queen when he was sworn in to the Privy Council in his role as Leader of the Opposition, opting instead to shake her hand. He also stood silently while others sang God Save The Queen at a Battle of Britain event in 2015, and has spoken about replacing the Queen with an elected head of state once the monarch dies.

Scottish Conservative MP Annie Wells criticised Labour supporters for their reaction.

She said: ‘ On the day the nation is celebrating this news, Labour Party supporters decided to boo and jeer.

‘That’s typical Labour; bitter, joyless, and completely out of step with public opinion.’

Theresa May said last night: ‘This is a time of huge celebration and excitement for two people in love and, on behalf of myself, the Government and the country, I wish them great happiness for the future.’

Democratic Unionist Party leader Arlene Foster was forced to apologise after she congratulated the wrong royal.

She tweeted: ‘Congratulations to HRH Prince William on his engagement to Megan [sic] Markle.’

‘Bitter, joyless and out of step’
